Explanation of the meanings of some most commonly use terms in the Security Shredding Field
Glossary list
Shredding
Anyone who handles confidential, personal or sensitive data must ensure shredding of this data in accordance with privacy law. The shredding is the process that reduces various media supports to tiny bits, in order to collect them for disposal, allowing for greater ease of transportation. Depending on the model and cutting head chosen, the shredder can shred not only the classic data medium of paper, but also digital data media such as CDs and DVDs, magnetic data supports as floppy disks and ID cards, electronic storage media such as chip cards and USB sticks, films, electronic boards, hard disks, PC components and chassis, plastic products and tubes, etc. What is crucial here is the security level, according to which the data media are either shredded into strips or small particles. The new DIN 66399 standard defines the security for all contemporary media.
Degaussing
Degaussing – a form of demagnetizing – is the process wherein a magnetic object, such as a magnetic storage tape or hard disk drive is exposed to a magnetic field of great intensity. This intensity is measured in Gauss, the higher the Gauss value, the greater the effectiveness of the degaussing process. A degausser is the machine that produces this intense magnetic field that allows to destroy the magnetic structure and ensure that the data are no longer recoverable. Since the technology does not rely on software, it will also completely and permanently erase failed and damaged hard drives regardless of the operating system or interface. Within the past several years, several laws have been passed outlining stricter guidelines and greater penalties for data security management. Companies can no longer simply throw away computer tape or hard drives because it is illegal to do so. In this contest the use of a degausser provides a safe and effective means of magnetic media data security for individuals, organizations, corporations and government agencies. The degausser will work ojnly on magnetic data support, threfore not on SSD nor other type of Elctronic data support. Visit our product section dedicated to the degausser product range for more info.
Bailing
The baling is the process that allow to compress the shredded material into compact bales, reducing the volume of material up to 80% as compared with collecting it in loose form. By using the baler as complement of the shredder it allows to collect the shredded material directly into plastic sacks, creating compact and manageable weatherproof bales. In this professional solution the shredder and baler operate in tandem and represent a complete, compact waste disposal station, shredder loading can continue while the baler is compressing the material. The baling process is completely automatic . In short it allows to optimize the shredded material piling and management and reduce logistic costs while the bales may be sold to recycling companies. Visit Depei Baler’s Products Section for more info.
Crushing
The crushing is the process that allow to crush hard drives by applying a strong mechanical pressure on them. The crusher physically bends and breaks the hard drive and its internal components including the data disk simply pushing a button. After crushing the support is no longer usable and is ready for disposal.
Sorting
E-Waste shredding systems can be combined with sorting devices that allow to separate shredded material according to its composition. By applying different sorting technologies such as winnowing, vibration technology and magnetism, depending on whether one uses air, vibrations or a magnet it is possible to separate plastics, ferrous and non-ferrous components with a separation accuracy up to 80%. These effective sorting systems allow greater opportunity for effective recycling and also provide many economic and environmental benefits originated from a smart waste management. The Sorting System can be installed downstream the BOWADP S70 Heavy Duty e-Waste Shredding System
Dust Extraction
The dust extraction is the process that allows to vacuum the dust produced during the shredding process, either paper and others small media or E-Waste shredding, keeping the working environment clean and safe for the operator. It is a stand-alone device and it can be used combined with different shredders.
Metal Separation Module
The Metal Separation Module is a system that use magnetic system to separate the ferrous parts, like rings, binders, clip and other ferrous parts present in documents folder, from the paper increasing its purity and therefore its value. The Metal Separation Module can be installed as optional in the BOWADP 7500 and BOWADP 7600 Large Scale Heavy Duty Shredder
